Salut!

My 4 weeks in France have sadly come to an end. I feel like the old cliché stating that all good things have to come to an end applies perfectly to this situation. I have spent one of the lost wonderful months of my life here in the French Riviera. Thursday July 28th the group went snorkelling in Villefranche-sur-mer. The view underwater was amazing and priceless! I saw an eel, rainbow fish, anchovies, and sadly a dead poisson de lune. May he or she rest in peace. After heading back shore, my friends and I decided to go to the town and explore it. Villefranche is pretty small yet beautiful town. It is filled with many little shops. Afterwards it was time to leave so we went to Nice and had our last group night there. We ate at a restaurant called the Warm Up and then sang karaoke! Our group has a wide variety of singers haha! But it was nice to hang out with the group one last time. I am sure going to miss them.

Today, Friday July 29th, I stayed home in the morning and packed. I really tried my best effort to keep my baggage within the weight requirements. Afterwards my host mom and I went to Cagnes-sur-mer and had kebabs along the beach. The view was absolutely amazing! I can’t believe I will not see that beautiful view for a long time. It was then time to go to our last group gathering and hang out with the group for one last time. It was very sad. I am going to miss everybody. The leaders and the staff were awesome and wonderful and great and I thank them for everything. We hugged it out for the last time and then headed to our respective homes. My last French dinner consisted of pork chops and gratin de pommes de terre; deliciously amazing.

I now bid adieu as this is my last blog. I had an amazing time here and I will miss everything about this place. I really hope I can maybe study abroad here in college because I definitely want to come back. Maybe I will live here one day. I will miss my host family, Françoise and Denis, my host cousin, Angélique, the Abbey Road staff, and all the people from the group. C’est pas au revoir, c’est à bientôt.

Thank you, Abbey Road for giving me this wonderful opportunity to study abroad in France. I will never forget it and will always have this memory not only in my mind, but also in my heart.

Vive la France!

Salut!

My stay in France is quickly and sadly coming to an end. Monday, July 25th, we visited St. Tropez! We took a train to the lovely Cannes, which I adore, and then took a 1 and a half hour boat ride to St. Tropez. Along the ride we saw the long and beautiful strip of the Maritime Alps and the many small surrounding towns. Once we finally arrived at St. Tropez, we had free time. I sat in the park and ate my lunch while I enjoyed the scenery. I then walked around and explored the many little shops around town. St. Tropez is full of shops and boutiques. However, they can be pretty pricey. St. Tropez is full of yachts and many people ready to spend money. Unfortunately for us, the nice sandy beaches were far from where we were and so we found another closer beach that was still fun. I stayed there for a while until finally it was time to go to our meeting point to return to Cannes. We once again road the boat to Cannes and then took a train to St. Laurent.

Tuesday, July 26th, was a fun day! After class, the group took a train from St. Laurent to Nice to go parasailing!! The weather was perfect for parasailing as it was very windy. None of is had been parasailing before. I was a bit scared yet excited. My parasailing partner was Farah, one of the group leaders. We quickly got hooked on the chute and took off. The take off was not as bad as I thought it would be. Once in the air, I felt as thought I was flying!! The boat driver lowered us so we could soak our feet in the water a couple of times. We then had to return and land. The landing was not as bad either. I loved parasailing and I would do it again anytime! Afterwards we had free time. I decided to go to French mass. It was a great experience as I actually understood the sermon and what the priest said! When it came to praying time, I did not know the prayers in French so I just prayed in Spanish. It was a magnificent experience that I would be willing to do again! I then walked around old Nice with friends and finally went to dinner. The dinner was at a sort of American restaurant. I had eggs with chorizo and they were delicious. We then had Salsa night!! I love dancing Salsa! We danced at Place Masséna along with some of the members of the Nice Abbey Road group and many Nice natives. It was so much fun!!! We then had to come back home. What a fun day!!

Today, July 27th, we went to Nice and had free time. I love Nice! I went shopping for a bit and bought some last minute presents. I swear I al going to miss this place a lot. Later I visited the Chagall museum with my French conversation and culture class. It was very interesting and pleasing. Chagall has a unique but great style. We then headed to catch a train to St. Laurent. Tonight was our show. The students all performed various acts from original French raps to dances. My group danced to Claude François' Alexandrie, Alexandra. I was surprised to see that many of the host parents knew the song. It was an entertaining performance. We then enjoyed a potluck dinner with a great variety of foods ranging from quiche and salads to pizza. It was yummy.

Time to enjoy my last days in France.
Salut!

I can’t believe my last week in France has started. Friday July 22nd was a relaxing yet fun day. We went to class and got the chance to talk to Mme Ben from the city hall. She was very nice and helpful. Then we practiced for our upcoming show which will be this Thursday. My friends and I are doing a number by Claude François called Alexandrie Alexandra. It is a very popular piece here in France so I hope it turns out great! Afterwards we had lunch and then free time. During free time I went to the mall for a bit then Played beach volleyball! My friend Grace and I played with 2 nice French gentlemen. They were way better than us. We then came home to eat and get ready to go to horse races in Cagnes-sur-mer. The horse races were fun!! We also got to see a cabaret show at the hippodrome which was different. It was a fun night!

Saturday July 23rd we went to Italy!! How I had missed Italy! We visited the town of St. Remo which is close to the border. We took a train from St. Laurent to Ventimiglia then from there we took another train to San Remo. We went with the Abbey Road group from Nice. We went to the known market in San Remo which sells a little bit of everything for somewhat lower prices. I then walked around town for a little bit and saw the beach there. There were a lot of people at the beach. I also got a delicious gelato! Since I am now used to speaking French all the time, it felt a bit strange going somewhere where French isn’t spoken but my Spanish helped me understand and most sellers and shops attendants spoke French. I was slightly sad to leave Italy but it I will one day go back! After Italy we went to Nice and had free time there. I bought some cute and comfortable shoes. We then ate delicious Italian food and had more free time. I love nights in Nice as it is vibrant and very much alive! I strolled down the market sand bought some things and then took a walk down the promenade des anglaises. How I love it there!! We then met up at the beautiful Place Masséna to return to St. Laurent.

Today, we visited the town of St. Paul de Vince. It is a tiny town close to Cagnes-sur-mer. It is a medieval town enclosed by a huge stone wall. It was absolutely gorgeous. We first went to the modern art museum there and then went inside the town. The little shops are so precious and cute but the streets are tiny. People barely fit but that is what makes the town unique! The walls, little shops, and houses still have that middle age touch, very unique and awesome. The view after reaching the very top of St. Paul was amazing! I visited the town church and it was small yet beautiful. I then descended back down to the meeting point where we all met to return to our homes.

Tomorrow: St. Tropez!!

Salut!

Ça va? J’adore la France!! It does not feel as if 2 and a half weeks have gone by! Lately we have continued visiting wonderful places such as St. Jean Cap Ferrat, and have been preparing for our end of the program show. July 20th was my friend Curtis’ birthday!! He turned 17 in France!! Early in the morning we took the train to Nice and walked to the museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. We were then split up in groups and were sent off to different music and book stores, such as Virgin and Fnac, to fill out some surveys. My group went to Fnac and our task was to get information on books such as which were popular and which were the bestsellers. We got good information and we also got to buy some books. I bought Madame Bovary by Flauvert. I know it will be a difficult read and I will be using my dictionary a lot but what’s life without a little challenge? After some free time in Nice we headed to St. Jean Cap Ferrat to cook. We split into é groups, one that would cook first and one that would cook second. I joined the second group. We decided to go to Kerylos Villa in Beaulieu while we waited. Kerylos was absolutely beautiful! We then went to make Lasagna. Our lasagne was not exactly amazing as it was very dry but we made our best effort. We then brought out birthday cakes for Curtis and my other friend Claire, who turns 18 Friday the 22nd. Joyeux anniversaire, Curtis et Claire!!!!

Today, July 21, we prepared our presentation in the morning and then headed to Antibes to go to Aquasplash waterpark! Although the park was small, we had fun sliding down the various water slides. Afterwards we each went to our respective host homes, ate, and called it a day.

I can not wait for the weekend!!

Bonjour!

Our third week has begun! Monday July 18th was a relaxing day. In class we talked about what we will do for our end up the program show. We came up with several ideas that included dancing, singing, and acting. It is extremely sad to think that this program will come to an end. Yesterday’s weather was also a bit different as it was slightly chilly. After class we had electives during which played several scenarios and afterwards had a several debates over different topics that were very interesting. We then had free time and while some went to the beach, I decided to go to Cap 3000 mall with some friends and eat French pastries and look at different stores as the many sales are currently going on. We then each parted to our respective homes. I was welcomed home with delicious lasagna! My host mom is an amazing cook! At the dinner table I spoke a lot with my host family over differences and similarities between the U.S. and France such as healthcare, immigration, cost of living, etc. It appears that the U.S. and France are not very different after all.

Today it rained and the rained ruined our plans. After class in the morning we were meant to go to Nice and have a pottery class but unfortunately, due to the rain a tree fell down and blocked the train tracks that allowed us to go to Nice and many routes were cancelled, including ours. Since the group van only sits 8 people, we would not make it to the class time therefore, we went to the cinema. Along with other friends, I watched a French movie called Le Moine. The film was not hard to understand language wise. I was very proud of myself for understanding most of it. The plot, however, was a bit bizarre and confusing but in the end everything came to light. We were also supposed to have salsa dancing in Nice but it was cancelled due to the rain therefore we had to return to our homes. My host mom made one of my favourite French dishes, galettes de Bretagne, and they were absolutely amazing! Some of the other girls in the program living in the same area came over and we had a great dinner followed by crepes for dessert. Yummy! I also finished watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in French! I love Harry Potter!!

I don’t want my stay in France to end.

Et nous continuons!

Bonjour!

These past few days have been amazing! July 13th we took the train to Nice early in the morning. We visited the Matisse museum of art. At first, we had to wait a while to enter the museum as the electricity had gone away. The museum had many works of Matisse along with those of other artists. It was very interesting and fun. After having our daily picnic just outside the Museum, we took a bus to go to the old village of Nice and have some free time to shop, eat ice cream, sight see, etc. Then, for French Conversation and Culture elective class, we joined along with the Nice Abbey Road group and watched Amelie in French. It was a very expressive yet interesting movie. Finally we took the train back to St. Laurent to get ready for the first part of the National Holiday festivities!

That night the group met at the St. Laurent port and walked to Cagnes-sur-Mer to celebrate the coming of the national holiday. There were so many people ready to have fun, dance, and enjoy the fireworks. There were many little shows going on along the streets but it was so much fun. My favourite was the dj as we danced with many young people and had a good time.

July 14th, La fête national, finally arrived!! The group returned to Cagnes-sur-Mer to enjoy a bike ride along the beach. Unfortunately, my group’s bike broke midway so we could not completely finish our ride so then we went to the beach. Afterwards we each went home to get ready for the fun! We went down to Nice and enjoyed bigger and greater fireworks. We experienced what was called “Prom Party” which has a great variety of music playing to enjoy along la promenade des anglaises. The night was very interesting to say the least.

July 15th marks the end of an era as it was cinema night Nice and many of us chose to go watch the last Harry Potter movie. It was AMAZING!!!! I was sad to see it end but was very happy it happened. Long live Harry Potter!! Oh and I also lost my camera memory card that day 

Saturday July 16th we spent the day in Antibes! I love Antibes! We visited the Picasso museum which has a lot of history and art. The building used to be a castle and Picasso lived there for a short while of time and then donated works of art when it became a museum. Like the Matisse museum, it was a wide range of pieces also from different artists. Following the museum visit we got to go to the sandy beach! The sand between my toes felt so good and the water was amazing and refreshing! We then had a picnic in the town of Antibes followed by some delicious ice cream. Yummy!

Today, July 17th, we went to Monaco!!! I must say I will one day purchase a home close to Monaco. It was very beautiful and amazing! The sights along the way were absolutely splendid and one of a kind. We first visited the palace where the Prince lives. The palace is full of history, elegance, and grandeur. We got to see the huge court where Prince Albert II and Charlène married two weeks ago, the room where Grace Kelly was crowned Princess, and other elaborately decorated chambers. All were absolutely stunning! After visiting the palace I went over to the other part of the palace museum that holds not only artifacts of the principality of Monaco, but other interesting objects such as swords and hats of Napoleon Bonaparte, letter from Cardinal Mazarin, Josephine, Napoleon, and King George. Afterwards I got to experience the fight of the changing of the guards outside of the palace. It was like a little ceremony. We then made our way to the museum of Oceanography. The building is very grand. Since the Prince barely married two weeks ago, Monaco is filled with news about the wedding and the museum held an exhibit dedicated to the royal Monaco wedding. The dress that Charlène wore and the suit that Prince Albert II wore were on display, along with wedding invitations, silverware, favors, and many wedding pictures. The tiara was also on display and it was absolutely stunning and fit for a princess! The museum itself has an aquarium with a variety of species of fish and sea creatures from all over the world. The museum also has many objects having to do with sailing such as tools used, objects found at sea, and sea creatures! I must say it was very interesting. We also got to see the Monaco port where the many yachts and boats are parked. It is beautiful!! After Monaco, we headed to Eze to visit the Fragonard parfum factory. We learned the many complicated details about the art of parfum making and saw other objects that the factory makes such as lotions, soaps, creams, and oils. It was very interesting and the factory smelled so good! The parfums were expensive but definitely worth it. We then got free time and I decided to visit the small town of Eze. As there was a lot of fog today, the little medieval town looked like a mystically enchanting place. Once again I saw a variety of cars which included Ferraris and Rolls Royce. The view was magical and mystical. We then returned to St. Laurent to our host families. My host mom mad some awesome lasagna.

I can’t believe two weeks have already gone by. I hope these other two weeks go by very slow because I do not want to leave 

Bonjour!

The adventures here in France keep coming! Yesterday, July 11, was a chill and normal day for the most part. Class was fun as we learned about local games and we even had the chance to play one! My friends and I had lunch on the steps of the town hall. It was the best place we could find that had the best shade. The heat is very much exhausting. Then, we had our electives. In the French Conversation and Culture elective, we practiced our French as we acted out several scenarios. It was an interesting experience. Afterwards, free time came and many of us went to the Cap 3000 mall and walked around and ate ice cream and pastries. It was extremely hot to walk outside. But I was welcomed home to a great dinner! I ate ground beef mixed in vegetables wrapped in a Chinese sort of dough. It was the first time my host mom made it but it was a great experiment!

Today was so much fun!!! After classes in the morning, we took a train to Beaulieu sur mer and went Kayaking!! The walk from the train station to the beach was extremely long but it was totally worth it! We had to split up into two groups and I had to wait being part of the second group. I swam in the beach and layed out to tan therefore my time was not wasted. Finally our time came and my friend Meridith and I decided ride the kayak together. We started off well and we got to go around the coastline and in between the yachts as well. It was so much fun! After 30 minutes we tied the kayaks and got off to swim in the water. It felt good and refreshing! It was then time to return so we made our way back to the shore. After finishing kayaking the group walked the walk back to the train station to return to St. Laurent.

I cannot wait to celebrate France’s national holiday July 14!!!
